Hi everyone, I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2015; recently I usually occur the Run out of application memory problem. I have searched and followed some instructions to solve the issue, but none is working. Usually, it will happen after restarting 1 or 2 hours; then my opening applications will be paused one by one. The screenshots I captured are after I left my Mac for about 30 minutes. I can not work or do anything if the OS keep pausing opening applications whenever it wants. I am going to reinstall the OS, but I am afraid that it won't help.
Now I am using Windows instead. Did anyone solve this problem yet? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply.
The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. There are 2 reasons for getting this message 1) The boot disk does not have sufficient space to create new /var/vm/swapfile(s) This reason is rarely the problem, but it needs to be mentioned, as once in awhile it is the cause.

2) The amount of 'Virtual' memory (NOT physical memory) requested by programs has gotten so large the kernel can no longer create virtual memory page table to keep track of all the virtual address to physical data location (where the physical location may be RAM, or it may be /var/vm/swapfile(s), or it maybe memory mapped files, such as the executable code for a program). This is the most common cause for this error message.
While virtual memory may allow a computer to run programs that need more memory than the computer has physical RAM, or to run lots of concurrent programs that together need more RAM then the computer has, it does not come for free. The kernel needs to keep track of where the data for each virtual page is current living, and when too many virtual pages are requested by applications, the kernel can exhaust its ability to keep track of any more virtual memory. While sometimes, this can be caused by trying to run too many programs at the same time.
It is more common for one of the program being run to have a virtual memory leak, and keep asking for more virtual memory, while loosing track of virtual memory it received prior to the current request. The problem is that Activity Monitor no longer gives you virtual memory usage information. You can use an Applications - Utilities - Terminal session to issue the following command ps -o pid, rss, vsz, comm -ax sort -k3n this will display the process id, the physical memory in kilobytes the program is currently using, the virtual address space in kilobytes the program is currently using, and then the program name. The sort command sorts the 3rd column, the virtual memory usage, so that last entry will be the program using the most virtual address space. Having more RAM just means you can have more virtual address page tables, but if you have programs with a virtual memory leak, they can still exhaust the kernel's ability to create more virtual memory page tables.

I added Scrivener 2.8.1.2; it opens the file but the documents are shown in a small window in the lower left corner of the screen. Makes it impossible to edit. Oddly, full screen mode will show the document and can be edited, but the app crashes within minutes.
This is sort of depressing as I use Scrivener a lot. I may need to see how a Time Machine restore goes. (I backed up prior to the install of High Sierra.) But I'll wait it out for a week or two and see if there are other updates from either macOS or Scrivener (not likely) and just use something else to write for the moment. I ran Microsoft Update for Office 2016 and checked the Insider Preview box and it updated all of office to 15.36. Now Outlook works again. Converted my Scrivener manuscript to Storyist 3.4.3 and that works. I added Scrivener 2.8.1.2; it opens the file but the documents are shown in a small window in the lower left corner of the screen.
